It is a wall system where plaster is applied in coats over lath, which gives the plaster something to grip. It was the standard for interior walls in many homes built before drywall took over, and it is still the base for traditional exterior stucco.

Can lath and plaster walls be repaired?

Yes. Cracks, loose sections and holes can often be repaired by a plasterer. Some work uses plaster washers or patching to re-secure loose plaster, and some needs new lath. A contractor can assess it on site.

Is a plasterer the same as a stucco contractor?

The trades overlap. Many companies do both, and in California both are covered by the same Lathing and Plastering contractor license class. Ask whether the crew regularly does the kind of work you need, inside or outside.
